AUGUST GARDEN TOUR 2022 // Summer Gardening in Zone 9b (Sacramento, CA)

August Gardening in Zone 9b

This month we’ve seen a whole lot of squash.. so much squash, center cut squash to be specific. Our tomatoes, cucumbers and cantaloupes have slowed down due to the summer heat wave & flower drop, but we are hopeful that after this 100 degree heat passes that we will have a small fall comeback with these plants. Our arched trellis which is full of tomato plants is quite beautiful this time of year, as is the rest of the raised beds and all of our trellises are quite full. I hope you enjoy this month’s garden tour!

Our Liberty House is a gardening lifestyle channel. Lucas & Beth live in Zone 9b, Sacramento, CA, (with their dog, Liberty!) and garden in 6 raised beds in our backyard garden. Together, we garden year-round and share what we are growing and what we are learning along the way. Our gardening strategy is to create a garden full of diversity. We intermix vegetables, flowers, and herbs to create an ecosystem where beneficial insects thrive. We avoid all pesticides and instead plant things that will take care of pests for us. We compost and try to live a sustainable life where we can ‘eat what we grow’ from our backyard garden. Thanks for joining us on our journey!

  1. I'm down in the Modesto area and this garden season has been productive. I just planted a second round of winter squash and green beans. I love that we still have 3 or so months left to grow. Our bell peppers did great! But the hot peppers barely produced. I'm hoping to have my winter veggies in by mid-October.

  2. Fresno here. The 100 degree days have been hurting us here too. It was comforting hearing ya'll are having the same results I've had with my garden this year. Thanks.

  3. Thanks for the tour Beth and Lucas, hunter-gatherer here from Elk Grove zone 9b. We planted Roma determinant tomato in a second round 🤣 Hopefully moar will be better. Really enjoy your channel🥰

  4. Thanks for the tour. I’m out in Fair Oaks and my centercut squash is also huge this year! It’s my favorite squash now. Last year I did have one get to the winter squash stage (it was hiding!) and cooked it like a butternut. Absolutely delicious!
