How To Mash Avocado And Keep It From Turning Brown?

Avocado has certainly risen to the top of the fruit and veg A-list, which is for a good reason. This creamy, nutritious green fruit is not only great for making guacamole, but avocado is also great in salads, on breakfast toast, in wraps, or even in desserts.

It seems that almost anything can be enhanced by an avocado these days. However, there is only one problem: avocados turn brown quite fast once cut open.

In this video, I will show you the super-effective way how you can mash an avocado and keep it from turning brown, even when not eaten for days.

Using a sharp knife, cut around the avocado but don’t cut into the pit in the middle.

Separate the two halves by twisting them in opposite directions. And using a knife or a spoon, remove the pit.

Now, scoop out all the delicious and creamy flesh with the spoon and put it in the bowl.

Now, we are going to deploy our first browning-prevention method, which is adding a dash of lemon juice to the avocado before mashing it.

Using a fork or a potato masher, mash it till it is smooth or junky enough for your taste.

If you plan to use all the mashed avocado in the next few hours, then the lemon juice would be pretty sufficient to prevent browning and keep the mashed avocado fresh and green.

However, if you have some leftovers and want to use it on the following day, place it in the sealable storage box and pat it down so it is nice and smooth on the surface.

Now, carefully pour a thin layer of cold water on top of the mashed avocado or guacamole. Don’t worry; because of the avocado’s high-fat content, it won’t absorb any water or make it soggy.

Now, let me show you how fresh it still looks on the following day or even a few days after being left in the fridge.

When you are ready to use the mashed avocado, remove it from the fridge and pour away the water on the top; give it a quick mix, and it is ready to be used.

  1. I am just wondering if there is a possibility to apply this method to a big quantity of avocado and put it in the refrigerator, without losing its excellent taste and benefits.

  2. Amazing video, really it is the most relevant and valuable for me. Really, we can easily know tips about how to Mash Avocados. I appreciate this video.

  3. Would it not turn brown if I didn't mash the avocado and just soaked it in water without the lemon juice? I use the avocado in my frozen graham cake and i'm afraid the lemon juice might ruin the avocado taste.

  4. Hi, just a quick question. Once you are removing the water in order to eat the mash but you don’t want to eat the lot do you repeat the process on the remaining mashed avocado in bowl? Lemon juice and cold water or just cold water ? Or once you remove the water it has to be eaten? Thanks in advance

  5. I did this. After 24 hours, it was a tan color in a few places. It was still edible and the brown went away when I mashed the avocado again after draining off the water. But I do not think this works past 24 hours.

  6. Question though, what happens if your avocado becomes hard to scoop out? When I tried it the avocado could not scoop out and became super slippery

  7. I just mashed my avocado and it occurred to me that there could be a possibility of storing it, and I found your channel. Thanks so much. Really love avocados so much. However, wondering how it would turn out if kept in the freezer?🤔

  8. Omg thank you so much for this. Regardless if leave my avocados out or in the fridge it always turns brown. Then i be pissed cuz i end up throwing the whole thing out

Definitely will be doing this from now on

  9. Amazing, thank you. I have been buying the pre-prepped cups of mash avocado that come individually wrapped and last for so long – but the unnecessary plastic waste was growing on me. This is SUCH an awesome solution. Much obliged!

  10. I can keep it green for 12+ days and fresh enough to eat for 7 to 8 days. Believe it or not, no company is interested!!! Why???

  11. The Theory is good, however Avocados have a very short Flavor life, an unripe Avocado that was FORCED to ripen ( by placing it a Bag or next to Citrus) it won't have as much flavor and adding Lemon or Lime juice can eliminate the flavor of an Avocado so be careful ….that's why Guacamole was invented, an unripe Avocado tastes like Wood even if the flesh is soft, but it's still good for you, so add Onions, Garlic, Cilantro, Tomatoes…whatever and eat it anyway. I've had MANY Avocado trees, when they are Ripe and at the peak of flavor, they literally Fall off the Tree and they are still firm, but the flavor is OUTSTANDING and adding anything would kill that flavor.
