Can AI Create World’s Best Marinara Recipe?
Can artificial intelligence — something without the sense of taste — create a tasty recipe? As a formally trained chef and recipe developer, I wanted to know. So I asked ChatGPT to generate the world’s best recipe for marinara sauce. Here’s how it went.

Ultimate Marinara Sauce — recipe from ChatGPT prompt
Makes: about 6 cups
Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Ingredients
• 2 (28-ounce) cans whole peeled San Marzano-style tomatoes
• 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
• 8 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
• 1 small yellow onion, peeled and halved
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
• 2 sprigs fresh basil, plus 10–12 leaves
• 1 teaspoon fish sauce or 1 anchovy fillet (optional, for extra depth)
• 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (optional, for a silkier finish)
Instructions
1. Prepare the tomatoes
Crush the tomatoes by hand in a large bowl, reserving all juices. Leave some small chunks for texture.
2. Build the flavor base
Heat the olive oil in a heavy pot over medium-low heat.
Add the garlic and cook gently for 2–3 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden. Do not let it brown deeply.
Add the anchovy or fish sauce (if using) and stir until dissolved.
3. Add tomatoes
Pour in the crushed tomatoes and juices.
Add:
• Onion halves
• Salt
• Black pepper
• Red pepper flakes
• Basil sprigs
Bring to a gentle simmer.
4. Simmer slowly
Cook uncovered for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
The sauce should reduce slightly and become rich and glossy. If it thickens too much, add a splash of water.
5. Finish
Remove the onion and basil sprigs.
Tear in the fresh basil leaves.
Stir in the butter (if using).
Taste and adjust salt.
For an ultra-silky restaurant-style sauce, blend briefly with an immersion blender.
Why this works
• Whole peeled tomatoes provide the freshest tomato flavor.
• Slow-cooked garlic creates sweetness without bitterness.
• The onion gently sweetens the sauce naturally.
• A small amount of anchovy or fish sauce adds umami without tasting fishy.
• Fresh basil added at the end preserves its aroma.
Chef’s upgrades
For an even more memorable sauce:
1. Add a Parmesan rind during simmering and remove before serving.
2. Use a mix of olive oil and a tablespoon of high-quality butter.
3. Let the finished sauce rest for 30 minutes before serving.
4. The next day, the flavor is often even better.
Serve with pasta, pizza, meatballs, eggplant parmesan, or simply with toasted bread and a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil.

It's a pan gripper!
The trivia tool gives off medical instrumentation vibes. 😮
It better not be one of those demonically spawned unitaskers.🫢
"It's not Mom's" 🤣
Marinara sauce is named for its Marine origin. It is a tomato sauce with seafood like muscles, shrimp, calamari etc. I do not understand why Americans call plain tomato sauce Marinara. It is Pomadoro if you want to be authentic Italian. The anchovies are a nice surprise but they have a meaty rather than seafood flavour.
yes, i agree with @kube613…the trivia item is heavy duty gripper for things like pizza or fryer baskets. I sometimes use the AI suggestions in my Brave browser for general ideas on cooking/baking. Can't say I've used it for exact recipe but then I look at recipes in general as suggestions to build on…mostly for ingredient proportions, cook temp and times, and such…😁. It's why I usually lookup several recipes for my ideas and glean from them all for a final personalized dish.
It's a lot easier to hand crush tomatoes if you slit them open with a knife and drain them first. Gently squeeze out the juice before crushing them. Is that tool a hot plate gripper tongs?
I have used AI to brainstorm recpies from time to time.
I use the results more as suggestions rather than a specific formula
I think you are in the majority when it comes to sugar in tomato sauce. I'm not, I'm a big-time enemy. I just finished making an Italian pasta salad. I wish I had thought to ask AI for some ingredients before I made it. I have tried Uta Hagen's recipe for spaghetti sauce and it was good. She also used half an onion and let the sauce simmer for a long time.
BTW, Saintrude said to tell you he has that same fork. Do you two shop at the same Goodwill?
My dyslexia kicked in and I read the title as "Can AI create the best marijuana recipe"…Good Grief
Pan gripper
It is a duck robot.
No. I'm not using an AI to steal ideas from online sources and have a recipe given to me without attribution to those sources. I've curated a number of online sources I go to for recipes. I know those sources provide reliable recipes that actually work. AI isn't creating anything.
AI can never create, all it can do is scrape the internet. I tried it a few times but found it most often suggested the "lazy" way.
Ai is notorious for making the worst recipes possible and copy pasting people's existing recipes.
It’s a pan or dish gripper
AI not for me! I’ve lived this long without it and I’m not starting now. That’s a pan/pot removable handle/ gripper.
Adding a carrot is the better solution to add sweetness and reduce acidity.
Fun video as per usual
