#79 トマトとバジルのパスタ・レモネード・ルッコラのサラダ / ひがしで農園 / 青狼會の入会条件
Masa) Hey. Staff) Oh! Staff) Today Masa) Today Masa) Hmm… Masa) Huh? Masa) Gloves… Staff) What? Staff) Whoa! Masa) Alright! Masa) Where should we decide it, She-chan? Masa) The section for the field? Masa) Here? Masa) Maybe closer to the entrance? Masa) Right now, we have shiso, cucumber Masa) Tomato Masa) Shishito peppers Masa) Eggplants Masa) And over here is okra Masa) Green beans Masa) Cabbage Masa) Scallions Masa) This here is potatoes Masa) And over there, that’s myoga. Masa) That’s udo. Staff) Udo. Masa) There’s a variety of stuff. Masa) Our yields are usually poor. Masa) Simply put Masa) It’s the soil. Masa)Soil not suitable for growing vegetables. Masa) The soil here is naturally Masa) Both good and bad Masa) Poor soil, Masa)to put it bluntly. Masa) The acidity, I think, is probably high. Masa) The optimal acidity for crops Masa) It’s usually around 6.5 in pH levels. Masa) pH Masa) Our… Masa) Our soil’s acidity Masa) How high it is, I don’t know. Masa) Alkaline? I’m not sure. Masa) So I bought a secret weapon. Masa) Ta-da! Masa) A pH measuring device! Staff) Amazing! Masa) Farmers Masa) Most of them have one of these Masa) I hate buying things, so Masa) I thought about borrowing one. Masa) Thankfully, they said, “I’ll lend it to you.” Masa) I thought buying one would be expensive, but Masa) It was 3000 yen on Amazon. Masa) 3000 yen Masa) 50% off, only 3000 yen. Masa) For 3000 yen Masa) Every household should have one. Masa) Right? Staff) Modern technology. Masa) Modern technology. Staff) Is it enough? Masa) Nope, the battery fell out. Masa) Ah, there it is. Masa) It’s like a dog park out here. Masa) Hmm Staff) So clingy. Masa) Yeah, so clingy. Masa)She’s smiling. Staff) Smiling? Masa) Yeah, she’s smiling. Staff) She-chan, are you having puppies? Masa) We tried pairing her with Jona-san’s Happy Masa) But she didn’t get pregnant. Masa)Whoosh! Staff) Will it work with that? Staff) 7… Staff) Oh! Masa) The higher the number, the more alkaline. Masa) Lower means acidic. Masa) It’s acidic. Staff) It’s dropping now. Masa) I thought it would be acidic. Masa) If it’s acidic Masa) We often burn firewood Masa) And use the ashes. Masa) Sprinkle lime Masa) To neutralize it. Masa) It’s 5.5. Masa) Pretty acidic. Masa) Around 5.5 to 6. Staff) I see. Masa) It’s a long process. Masa) Converting this whole area Masa) To 6.5 is difficult. Masa) To 6.5 is difficult. Masa) Bit by bit, when we get more ash Masa) We’ll sprinkle it here and Masa) Gradually work on it. Masa) That’s the plan. Masa) It’s a long story. Staff) Are you staying away from overseas for now? Masa) Yeah. Masa) Not at all interested. Masa) Right now in Japan Masa) There are so many fun things to do. Masa) Like working with soil. Masa) And building my shed Masa) It’s still not finished. Staff) That’s true. Masa) I also want to build a chicken coop. Masa) When I was younger Masa) I traveled abroad Masa) To rediscover myself. Masa) And to learn different values. Masa) I felt I needed to study a lot. Masa) Those trips when I was young had great meaning. Masa) Now Masa) I wouldn’t say it’s meaningless Masa) But more like Masa) Learning from the past while discovering the new Masa) There’s so much to do in Japan. Masa) So Masa) There’s no need to purposely go to foreign countries. Masa) I’m enjoying myself right now. Masa) Did I talk about no-till farming? Staff) Nope. Staff) Not yet. Masa) At first, the yields Masa) Are lower with no-till farming. Masa) It’s an agricultural method Masa) That’s gaining attention Masa) And trending recently. Masa) It’s one type of farming. Masa) To put it simply Masa) Instead of plowing Masa) You just cut down Masa) What they call weeds Masa) Cut down what has grown in one go Masa)Just cutting it is enough. Masa)No need to dig up the roots. Masa) And plant seeds on top. Masa) From the outside, it looks Masa) Like a messy, weedy plot. Masa) But on that land Masa) Vegetables can grow using this method. Masa) It’s called ‘no-till farming.’ Masa) No tilling, as the name suggests. Masa) Instead of tilling the soil and adding chemical fertilizers Masa) By cutting grass Masa) You attract Masa) Various kinds of insects to the area. Masa) It becomes a habitat for them. Masa) It creates an environment closer to nature. Masa) A natural balance. Masa) Throughout Japan and the world Masa) Insects are decreasing. Masa) That’s another reason why no-till farming Masa) Is something I want to pursue. Masa) But no-till farming Masa) While easier in some ways Masa) It’s something humanity Masa)has aimed for over 8,000 years Masa) But has rarely achieved in practice. Masa) It’s that difficult. Simply put Masa) Without chemical fertilizers Masa) Or natural fertilizers like chicken or cow manure Masa) It’s challenging to grow crops. Masa) It can definitely be done, though. Masa) Establishing proper no-till farming Masa) Requires significant knowledge Masa) And perseverance. Masa)I have to have the guts Masa) You need a lot to make it work. Masa) Earthworms Masa) They help create good soil. Masa) So don’t dig too much. Masa) To pursue no-till farming Masa) First, I have to balance the pH of the soil. Masa) During the season when leaves fall Masa) I need to collect them from the mountains. Masa) And enrich the land without chemical fertilizers. Masa) Making the soil fertile. Masa) Eventually, achieving no-till farming Masa) Even if it takes years. Masa) Again, earthworms. Masa) There they are, little guys. Masa) Moroheiya (Molokhia). Masa) Our area is at a high elevation. Masa) In the valley or town Masa) The seedlings sold are usually for Masa) Local farmers or home gardeners. Masa) Their growing season Masa) Ends about a month earlier than ours. Masa) That means Masa) While it’s still spring here Masa) It’s already summer down in the valley. Masa) So, the seedlings sold there Masa) Are often past their prime growing season. Masa) Spring and summer vegetables Masa) Get discounted after their peak season. Masa) They just want to sell them off. Masa) And that’s when I buy them. Masa) That discount Masa) Makes it just the right time for me to plant. Masa) So, Moroheiya that would normally cost 200 yen Masa) I get for 50 yen. Masa) Again, earthworms. Masa) Good to see you, little guys. Staff) Looks like fun. Masa) Growing vegetables? Staff) Yeah, gardening. Masa) It’s enjoyable. Staff) I’ve never tried it. Staff) But it looks fun. Staff) Might be worth a shot. Masa)Yeah, It’s interesting to grow. Staff) Tending to the plants? Masa) Carrying a watering can up and down Masa) For watering is a bit of a hassle. Masa) Wow, wow. Masa) Parsley. Masa) Parsley again. Masa) And this is celery. Masa) Do you like celery? Staff) Celery, well Staff) I don’t mind it. Staff) Do many people like celery? Masa) I like celery. Masa) We grow up in different environments Masa) So tastes vary. Staff) Ah, yes. Staff) I’ve heard that before. Masa) A cicada. Staff) Already? Masa) Yes, in May. Masa) It’s early. Masa) Wow Masa) What happened? Staff) She thinks she was called. Masa) Did you think you were being called? Staff) What’s that? Masa) It’s radish sprouts. Staff) Radish? Masa) Yes, they germinate Masa) At an incredible rate. Masa) Just sow these, and Masa) There you go. Masa) Let’s make and eat lunch next. Masa) We hunters Masa) Started the group called ‘Seiroukai.’ Masa) And so Masa) Eventually, we aim to Masa) Bring venison to human tables. Masa) By setting up a proper processing facility. Masa) Which means Masa) We’ll need professionals with cooking expertise Masa) Because preparing venison or boar Masa) Isn’t easy for most people. Masa) So, in that context Masa) Hygiene management Masa) And food safety certifications Masa) Are essential. Masa) I decided to get certified Masa) For food preparation. Staff) Is it difficult? Masa) Apparently, you can get certified Masa) In just one day of training. Staff) Online? Masa) Yes, online. Staff) Like those self-study courses? Masa) It’s probably even easier than that. Staff) You could even open a shop. Masa) We will, eventually. Masa) But honestly Masa) We’re not very profit-driven. Masa) It’s more about Masa) Having a meaningful purpose. Masa) That’s the core of what we want to do. Masa) So Masa) It won’t be about mass production Masa) Or opening a chain. Masa) That’s not our aim. Masa) If we stick to our ideals too rigidly Masa) It’s hard to know… Masa) It won’t be financially viable. Masa) And we won’t be able to sustain our lives. Masa) But gradually Staff) So, not just selling, but running a store? Masa) Exactly. Staff) Like your mentor’s restaurant in Gunma? Masa)Restaurant “Tanto kuwassai”? Staff) That’s the idea? Masa) Though, I don’t think Masa)Running a specialty restaurant Masa)is probably out of my league. Masa) They’re more like chefs Masa) Whereas we might focus on something simple Masa) Like venison curry. Masa)I haven’t decided what kind of. Masa) Maybe just one specialty dish. Masa) We’ll aim for a casual, drive-through-style place Masa) Rather than a full-fledged restaurant. Masa) A full restaurant setup isn’t feasible. Masa) Setting up Masa) A base like that Masa) And maybe opening it Masa) as a restaurant for close friends at night. Staff) Sounds great. Masa) There are some young folks who have moved to this area. Masa) If this creates jobs for someone Masa) That would be great for the community. Staff) Before you know it, you’ll be the village head. Masa) What do you mean? Masa) Salt. Masa) Olive oil. Masa) This lemon Masa) Was on the discount shelf. Masa) It was less than half price. Masa) Lemons are Masa)pretty slow Masa) to start rotting. Masa)Fairly long period of time to eat. Masa)That’s why these are; discounted one, Masa) Softer and easier to use. Masa) They’ll last another two weeks like this. Masa) It’s really useful. Masa) Discounted ones are often better Masa) Even slightly aging meat tastes better sometimes. Masa) Here’s the first dish. Staff) Salad. Masa) Yes, a arugula salad. Sugar. Masa) The other day Masa) I had homemade lemonade Masa) At a family’s house in Ecuador. Masa) They just dissolved sugar Masa) In water, Masa) added lemon Masa) And that was it. Masa)I thought I hadn’t noticed that simple idea! Masa) Lemons were cheap today, so I’ll make some lemonade. Masa) It’s a good day for it. Staff) That’s a great idea. Staff) What’s the concept of Seiroukai? Masa) Seiroukai Masa) Is a hunter group. Masa) I came up with the idea initially Masa) Because most of the game Masa) About 90% of the animals caught are discarded. Masa) I saw them being dumped Masa)into the holes in the burial ground treatment plant. Masa)and I have indescribably mixed feelings about it. Masa)To get rid of that problem. Masa) I wanted to give their meat purpose. Masa) To honor their existence in some way. Masa) So we want to start making jerky Masa) For pets, Masa)To develop and sell its products. Masa) That was our first project. Masa) Plus, Masa) Walking in the mountains as a hunter Masa) You realize how much humans have Masa) Altered the environment. Masa) Bear habitats have shrunk Masa) And conifer forests are expanding unnaturally. Masa) It’s too much interference. Masa) In the deep mountains, Masa)Building erosion control dams and weirs. Masa)Humans have built too many of those facilities. Masa) Wildlife, especially bears Masa) Needs to be Masa) at a sustainable level. Masa) To maintain true richness and diversity Masa) In our ecosystems. Masa) The members of Seiroukai Masa) Are getting more knowledgeable about the mountains. Masa)Bear’s den. Masa)where bears start hibernating. Masa) We want to locate and document Masa) And share that knowledge within the group. Masa) I want to create such a group. Masa)Old-time, information about bear nests. Masa) Hunters used to naturally have this knowledge Masa) So did the hunters in my area. Masa) But such hunters have nearly disappeared now. Masa) We, the younger generation, want to protect and honor Masa) The mountains in the same way. Masa) Quiet, She-chan. Masa) We want to create a group like this Masa) And that’s how Seiroukai began. Staff) How many members are there? Masa) Currently… Masa) Seven. Staff) That’s quite a few. Masa) To join, you need Masa) What I mean, Masa)Qualifications. Masa) Experience carrying a deer down Masa) from the mountains on your own. Staff) I guess I can’t join… Masa) Nope, you can’t. Masa) You have to understand the difficulty Masa) Of that experience. Masa) Without it, we can’t share a common language. Masa) That experience becomes our shared foundation. Masa) Taking full responsibility Masa)When you were in the mountains, Masa) You’ve had the experience of pulling the trigger on a game with a gun. Masa) By yourself. Masa)With real experience. Masa) Carrying the game down on your own Masa) It gets dark fast, and Masa) It’s terrifying. Masa) If you sprain your ankle, you’re stuck. Masa)With many thoughts and feelings Masa) It’s all these emotions Masa) That make you respect the meat you bring back. Masa) That kind of experience Masa) Is what I want our members to share. Staff) Does it have to be from stalking? Masa) Yes, Masa) It could be trapping. Masa) Specialized trappers are great too. Staff) Smells great. Masa) Yeah. Masa) It’s basil. Masa) This much basil for 100 yen. Masa) And Masa) It’s grown wild. Masa) This basil tastes amazing. Masa) Then Masa) Garlic. Masa) I want to finish my shed soon Masa) And live a simple life inside it. Staff) Do you really think about that? Masa) Yes, I do. Masa) It’s about not having a fixed address. Staff) That’s true. Masa) Here Masa) This house, this region Masa) This area. Masa) To live here Masa) I’m opening a bank account soon. Masa) They told me I need a lease agreement. Masa) A lease agreement? Masa) I asked Yoshi-san about it Masa) And he said, ‘Sure, I’ll make one.’ Masa) Yoshi-san is Masa) The owner of this land. Masa) Or possible by his descendants. Masa) It’s written that it’s perpetual until I die. Masa)I’ve never seen a lease like that. Masa) Tomato. Masa) And salt. Masa) Pepper. Staff) Oh! Masa) Alright. Masa) Oops Masa) The water is running low. Staff) Salt? Masa) Salt. Staff) Didn’t you add a lot already? Masa) That was for the boiling water. Staff) And now on the tomatoes too? Masa) No, no. Staff) Do you cut your hair after finishing a project? Masa) But this project I’m on now Masa) Will take two years to film. Staff) Two years? Staff) That long? Masa) Yeah. Masa) It’s planned to go through seasons two Masa) And even season three. Staff) Even before season one airs Staff) They already decided? Masa) They’re pretty certain about it. Masa) Something like that. Masa) Right now, I have a good balance. Masa) Things were too busy recently. Masa) As an actor Masa) I shouldn’t push too hard. Masa) Not pushing too hard, not overloading Masa) Allows me to enjoy work more. Masa) And still have time for life here. Staff) What’s fun work for you, Masa-san? Masa) Travel-related projects. Masa) Delicious. Staff) Yeah, it’s good. Masa) Really good. Masa) Should we add more soda water? Staff) Thank you. Staff) Want to see it? Staff) I already opened it once. Masa) What is it? Masa) Ah. Masa) That shield-like thing. Staff)Yeah, This is the Youtube play button Staff) Aren’t you taking it out? Masa) Well Masa) It’s neither heavy nor light. Masa) Just the right weight. Staff) True. Staff) Beautiful. Masa) If you twist and let it snap Masa) It pops nicely. Staff) Most people don’t twist when they do it. Masa) Really? Masa) I haven’t seen many people Masa) Adding pasta like that. Staff) Looks delicious. Masa) Let’s eat. Masa) Itadakimasu. Masa) Mmm. Masa) Mmm. Masa) This is good. Staff) Itadakimasu. Masa) This arugula is delicious. Staff) Really good. Staff) I usually don’t eat vegetables. Masa) Oh, really? Masa) What do you eat then? Staff) Meat, brown rice, and eggs. Staff) This is good. Masa) The spaghetti is great. Staff) Really tasty. Staff) This is it, after all.
