Would you put sugar and ketchup on a sandwich? 🤯

My partner-in-food, @NomtasticKim, told me about this popular Korean street food called gilgeori toast, and once I saw it, I had to try making it!

From my understanding (correct me if I’m wrong), the traditional recipe is made by mixing an egg into cabbage, carrots, and onions and frying it all in a pan. Then putting ketchup and sugar on top before putting it all between two slices of white bread. And I love Spam, so I decided to throw a couple slices in there to beef it up a bit 😋

All in all, it’s really good! I’ve seen recipes using anywhere from 1-2 tsp of sugar, but I’d actually use less. You already get some sweetness from the ketchup and carrots.

👉 The full recipe is below, and be sure to let me know what you think if you give it a try! 🙌

INGREDIENTS
3 oz cabbage (shredded)
1 tbsp carrots (shredded)
2 tbsp onions (chopped)
1/2 tsp gochugaru (Korean red chili pepper flakes)
pepper (to taste)
1 egg
1 tbsp butter
ketchup (to taste)
1/2 tsp granulated sugar
2 slices white bread)

1️⃣ Shred your cabbage and carrots, and chop the onion. Put them in a small mixing bowl along with the gochugaru, pepper, and egg, and mix well with a fork.
2️⃣ Take the Spam out of the can and slice two relatively thick pieces (about 1 cm thick). In a small pan over medium heat, cook the spam slices.
3️⃣ Butter the small frying pan, and place it over medium heat. Pour the mixture into the pan and try to keep it in a circle shape that’s about the size of your bread. Cook until you see the edges of the egg solidify (about a minute), then flip it over and cook for another 30 seconds.
4️⃣ Place one slice of bread on top, and flip the whole thing over so the bread is on the pan and the egg is sitting on top.
5️⃣ Pour on the ketchup and sprinkle the sugar evenly across the egg, and layer the Spam slices on top. Move quickly so the bread just gets toasted and not burned. You can also turn the heat off and just use the residual heat from the pan to toast the bread to be safe.
6️⃣ Put the second slice of bread on top, and flip it over to toast it. Then, serve!
