観光客 vs 地元民 – 九份の台湾屋台料理と基隆夜市

Buongiorno, guys! It’s Max Ginestra and I’m in Jiufen, beautiful old town and look at the view. Mamma Mia!
Look at the view, beautiful Pacific Ocean. So, the plan for the day is to explore the old town, trying some street food, going to Keelong City and then the night market. It’s going to be a massive day. I’m starving, so let’s give it a go. First meal of the day. Okay, this is very unique. I heard it’s quite popular here in Jiufen. It’s like a big dumpling stuffed with meat. It has a nice colour but the presentation
could have been a little bit better. Guys, this is a touristy spot. The service that you get is according to where you go. All right, let’s give it a try. Wow. It’s super hot You are absolutely going to love
the texture of the skin. Almost like gooey. And then there is pork in it. And the broth. What I can taste is 100% cinnamon. I love it! It’s a very unique big dumpling.
Look at this This is something that at the end you are going to drink. The pork inside is pipping hot That’s actually quite surprisingly good.
I didn’t expect that. They’ve been making this
for the past 31 years so they know what they do. I’m loving it even though the place is too touristy. Anyway, I’m going to finish this
and then we continue While we were walking, we stop by this place. They are making traditional rice cakes. This one is the owner’s favourite, with red bean and they also make it with radish. Let’s try this savoury one first. The one we radish. Wow…
Look at that. It’s like mochi. Oh! Oh, yeah. It’s like mochi. It’s savoury and it tastes like fish.
I didn’t expect that. Might not be my favourite. Wow, oh!
My God, it tastes like fish. After the dumping that I had before, I did not expect to have something like this in my mouth. Well, Woah Oh, my God.
The taste is so strong But this is the owner’s favourite. The one with red bean. You can tell.
And let’s go for it. Oh! It’s much better. Everything with red bean tastes so much better. And I think it’s quite a legendary spot they’ve been open for a very long time. If you come to Jiufen old street, which is very popular and touristy,
you can stop by this place. We stop at another legendary spot where they serve sweet taro balls, homemade. It’s a very traditional shop. I’ve been recommended to have it cold especially because it’s very hot outside. Look at this. We have these colourful
taro balls and mixed beans, of course, ice. So let’s go for it. Mmm..
Woah! I like the consistency. It’s like mochi, gooey, elastic and then you got the mushiness of the beans. It’s not too sweet and very refreshing. Guys, It’s happening right now. Everything is live in front of you Oh, my God.
It’s so loud. All right. So, because it’s obviously very hot and the ladies want to turn on the fan, but unfortunately, the fan is too loud anyway. And that’s why we all having this dessert, because it’s refreshing and not too sweet, which is good And it’s finally time for lunch. We stop by this place because after I saw the chicken and the two massive pots. I said, we have to stop here. The place was full. Nice service as well. So that makes it easy for me to pick a place. So we ordered a quarter of a chicken with ginger, and we got rice with chicken oil. We kept it simple because we have a lot more food to try later. We ordered as well stir fried shitake mushrooms. I’m a massive mushroom lover. Let’s go for the chicken.
Let’s dip it in It’s nice and tender. Let’s try the rice as well Oh! It’s a perfect combo It’s sweet and salty, crunchy. Nice!
That’s what I needed. Now let’s go for the mushroom. We have mushroom, corn, peppers, beans. Let’s go for it. Nice and hot. That’s what I needed. Because until now we snacked. We needed this meal. Nice protein. So to chill out a little bit. We made it to a very beautiful
and charming teahouse. Jiufen teahouse It’s very historic and old. I love the interior. it’s just my kind of thing. And here in Jiufen one of the must things to do is try their tea-Oolong tea. They are very famous for it. One of the girls introduced and gave us a massive introduction about the tea, the culture and everything, and also how to make it, how to brew it and
how to pour it. After that demonstration I have the tea in front of me
and the Oolong tea cheesecake. Let’s try the tea. It smells herbal and um.. almost like a biscuit. Oh, my God. That’s what I needed. Now the cheesecake. Let’s do like this Mmm..Oh! It’s nice and cold, you can definitely taste oolong tea. It’s nice and refreshing, thick, cheesy. Oh, I like it. Oh, so far the day has been great. It’s very hot. The place is super touristy People are decently friendly, the food is good. There are a few legendary spots. I love the tea experience, What else?
I loved the chicken before. It was delicious. And now we are going to enjoy this moment. Just the two of us, my wife and I. And after that we’re going to Keelung and we’re going to take you with us. All right.
See you soon! Hello! First stop here in Keelung City is a very local one. We are in a very local neighbourhood and as soon as you come to this place you get greeted by that nice bubbling
pot full of ingredients. You got organs, pig blood, radish, tofu stomach, you name it. What we did with the help of our body language and just finding our stuff, we got a ball with a mix of stuff. After that, she cut everything, poured a thick sauce on top and then chilli. All right, so we got radish, organs, pig blood, tofu. We got several. Let’s go for an easy one. Let’s go for the tofu first. A bit spicy! Actually, quite simple. It just tastes like stewed tofu. Nice consistency with a kick from the chilli. And now we’re going hard. Pig blood cake. Okay. Wow, I felt it. So the texture is like tofu, very soft. But it has a bit of a smell. I don’t know if it’s like sort of an organs odour, but it has a smell. Let’s go for the intestine. Chewy, actually clean and cooked very well. This one has almost no odour. This is nice. What I love is that it’s full of locals, people keep coming, it’s a family-run business. It’s very cool. You’ve got that bubbling pig pot right at the entrance and that sells it all to me. And I almost forgot to try their signature one, this is tempura fish cake. Oh my God! Out of all No doubt, this is my favourite. This place is incredible. Family run business. Everyone is super friendly. They make everything fresh in front of you. Even though you don’t speak the language, they really help you. What a cool experience we’re having. And I think they are famous also for the tempura, fish balls, radish. Yes, I think we picked the right ones. They also have lungs, I believe, all sorts of organs. They have it all. Boom. We made it to Keelung Night market, very popular. Especially what makes it so different are all these yellow lanterns that hopefully later in the evening
will be turned on. Now we go around because I’m starving. First location here at the market This is iconic. You find it very easily because they have their own number and below they have the name of the dish that they sell. It’s a thick crab soup which is this one right here. Look, thick with mushrooms, carrots, cilantro and crab meat. Look at the crab! And glutinous rice with mushrooms in it. They sell these two dishes. This place is full, very famous. I really want to start with this one. Let’s give it a go. Oh, wow, it’s very peppery. Thick, one hundred per cent they put some sort of starch or maybe cornflour. You get a nice crunch from the carrots, the meat, crab meat, nice and soft. I love the consistency of the mushrooms Nice and chewy. Maybe a little bit too peppery for my liking. For my liking But now let’s see how it goes with the glutinous rice Nice and then.. Actually, together it’s good because the rice balances very well the pepperiness I don’t know if its an English term, but you know what I mean. of the soup. It’s like brother and sister. Oh, okay. All right, see. Now they’re giving us instructions. This sauce, this one here. And this is soy sauce, not too much. Just mix up everything. It’s so much better. Oh, my God. Sorry. I spat out the hell out of me. I think it is vinegar. Wow. That gives it a nice kick to it. So make sure, if you come here, you add this sauce to the soup. And now let’s try the glutinous rice with the red sauce Sweet chilli. I would have never known without her Look at the crowd, people lining up. Everyone here eating bar style. I just love it. Two ladies, two dishes, glutinous rice, crab soup. What a start we’ve had. Oh, so far this market is hectic Full of people, obviously all locals. But what I love is the food that they sell. So they all eat bar style, like the soup that we had before All around these giant massive pots full of stuff. It’s incredible and they sell dishes that i’ve never seen before. Crazy. I cannot wait to explore more. Look at this temple. Look at this. This beautiful temple is just in the middle of the market I’m joining this line. I almost don’t know what they sell, but it’s written, nutritious sandwiches. Okay long line. All right. Here we have the nutritious sandwich, which is apparently a deep fried one. The gentleman at the back makes a the dough, makes the sandwich, deep fries it, and then he opens it, he spreads mayo, and then he stuffs it with tomatoes, cucumbers, some wurstel, sausage, and egg. This is going to be very heavy. It’s a bit sweet. It’s almost like a doughnut. The mayo is thick and sweet. Then you’ve got the crunchiness and freshness from cucumbers, then that super processed wurstel. Too sweet for my liking. I didn’t expected it to be sweet. Maybe they put a lot of sugar in the mayo, but overall it’s not bad at all. That’s a good one. Oh, look at the bread. Oh, the gentleman is coming with more ingredients already sliced. Well, guys, look at this. I finished it. Sherly behind the camera tried it And I think she said the right thing it’s weirdly nice. The deep fried dough, which is almost sweet, combined with the mayo, which is also sweet. And then the other savoury ingredients. It’s weirdly nice. Thank you, We join queues, just random queues. Just because. Just because we want This place sells one bite sausages. It’s very popular of course. Oh see they’re delivering sausages because this place is an absolute machine. You can order as many as you want since we gonna be eating a lot and we’ve already been eating since this morning, we’re going to try one each. My wife and I. Pork sausages. They look cute, they look greasy. They look delicious. All grilled on the hotplate over there. Let’s go for it. Sweet, fatty. Nicely charred. That’s nice, huh. Oh, I can see myself having a dozen of this. Oh and they don’t even need sauce. I think they’ve been marinated in something. It’s a bit sweet. Really, really good. Amore! Feeling, feelings. How do you feel? Okay.
She’s smiling. Okay. And then she’s satisfied. What did you say? Very good. Really, really good. I mean, the line speaks for itself. Look at this! One bite sausage. Who doesn’t like sausages? Come on. Unless you’re vegan Now we’re walking to one other direction. The market is pretty big. It extends till the end of.. the street. It’s huge. I thought it was a small one. Oh my God, for a city like this, this market is huge and fantastic. Thank you A dish that we haven’t tried yet here in Taiwan but it’s very famous is oyster omelette. We found a gentleman right here making oyster omelette with fresh oysters, eggs, veggies. And then I think he also adds, look at the consistency here. some flour or some sort of starch. We’ll find out very soon. Then at the end,
he pours on top of some chilli sauce and a thick maybe sweet sauce. We’ll find out very soon. Let’s go for it Look at the oyster! Buon appetito! The fact that he adds flour in it he makes it more compact and doesn’t make it fall apart. I love it. And the sauce? Sweet and spicy. So I guess it’s a sweet chilli sauce. Where is he? I wanted to say that it was was delicious. I’m usually very picky with my oyster omelette and.. because in the past, not all the time, I had great experiences but this one is pretty good. See, this is one of the many, if not thousands of dishes that you can get here inside this market. I’m insanely impressed and surprised by the abundance of food, people, how big the market is and the quality. Wow, it might be my favourite market in Taiwan. Raohe night market ( in Taipei) is very good as well so it’s a big battle between the two. And exactly 50 metres away from the market, you can see the market over there, we’re here another massive line but this time for noodles I heard this noodle shop is very local and popular. They make some unique noodles, this time stir fried We haven’t had stir fry noodles in Taiwan yet so I think it’s time to give it a try. Oh, I also want to know what the fuss is about. After 30 minutes standing in line, we already placed an order they’re making it over there Oh, this place is amazing. Okay. 100 Taiwanese dollars, you pay immediately. Stir fried noodles, with curry and seafood. I’ve never seen it before. Look at this. That’s pretty much everyone orders. Look, egg noodles, thick sauce, thick curry at the bottom, we have, maybe this is liver, we have prawns, other seafood, maybe squid. I believe this is chicken, veggies. Oh, yeah! I love this place. Rough, local. Mamma mia! Let’s go for it! It’s mega packed. Buon appetito you know what it tastes like? Curry, almost like Indian curry. It’s a very unique plate on noodles. Let’s try the seafood. I’m now going to remove the shell. Let’s do like this. Oh, it’s insanely hot. I want to show you that curry at the bottom. So thick. It really reminds me of Indian curry style noodles. It really tastes like all the spices, all the Indian style garam masala. Thick, peppery, almost aromatic. Kind of medicinal. Before coming here, I did not expect the noodles to taste like this. It was worth a try. I love egg noodles, I love stir fry noodles, I love when the sauce is this thick and brings everything together. The taste, I think, is not for everyone. Now it is for me. I think you need to get used to it but I quite like it. I’ll give it a seven out of ten. Our final dish of the day is a dessert,
but it’s not your average dessert. It’s a peanut, cilantro ice cream burrito. Yes, you heard me well. So, what the lady does is scrubbing peanuts out of the block, she places it on top of this rice paper thin roll. Then she places on top some ice cream, taro and vanilla, I believe. And then cilantro. Super unique. See, it’s a burrito. With cilantro, it’s crazy. Yeah, we never tried it before. I was so curious Let’s give it a try. Very unique. You can really taste the cilantro. Wow. Of course, peanuts, crunchy peanuts, thick ice cream. And then this wrap that complements
everything. It’s actually nice, almost caramelised. Look at the green of the cilantro. It gives a nice, refreshing touch to it. But so weird. But somehow it makes it so good. Good? Oh, yeah. Delicious! Very good. Yes. Yes. And the girls are so nice. It’s a machine. We passed by a couple of times
and it was always full and that we said by the end of the video, we gonna have it. I always end my videos with a dessert and this is the perfect one. All right, guys, that’s it for today’s video. What a great day we’ve had. Oh, we started in Taipei, ended it Keelung City. We went to Jiufen, a beautiful old city with an amazing view, good food. It’s very touristy and this market right here, Keelung City night market is absolutely explosive. Now I’m going to make a massive statement. Keelung City night market, according to me, is the best night market so far that I visited here in Taiwan. Nothing compared to the ones I visited in Taipei. Absolutely nothing. Amazing. Having said so, what I want to tell you is if you want to know how we went from Taipei all the way to Jiufen City and Keelung City by public transport so that you don’t have to spend a fortune in taxi. I leave everything in description box down below. Also, if you like more videos like this, make sure to subscribe, comment, drop us a like, share with friends and family and love you so much. 1. I have almost been to every night market in Tawian.
Dadong Night Market, Tainan and Hanxi Night Market, Taichung are the best night market in Taiwan for me.
Nanjichang Night Market is also very good as well, selling a lot of local traditonal food.
Ningxia and Shilin are defintely the most overratted.
Keelung is mid Tier for me. Not bad

  2. 草仔粿 It is made from glutinous rice flour and mugwort as the main ingredients. The green filling is savory and is usually made by shredding radish, adding other ingredients such as ground pork, dried shrimp, dried mushrooms, and shallots.

  3. I've tried the same food you've eaten before, but it seems even better when you eat it. Thank you for promoting Taiwanese cuisine.

  4. If you'd like, or if you have time to come again, I can be your guide and take you to eat where the locals do. I'm a Keelung native.

  5. Your best food videos presenting their food culture in taiwanese streetfood. All kinds of
