🥧 Classic Apple Strudel Recipe

📋 Ingredients
For the Filling:
6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/3 cup raisins (optional; soak in rum or warm water to soften)

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp lemon zest

1 tbsp lemon juice

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (toasted in 2 tbsp butter)

2 tbsp unsalted butter (melted, for brushing)

Powdered sugar, for dusting

For the Dough (or use 6–8 sheets of phyllo):
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup lukewarm water

1 tbsp vegetable oil

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp vinegar (optional, for elasticity)

🧑‍🍳 Instructions
If Making Dough from Scratch:
Make the Dough: Combine flour, salt, water, oil, and vinegar in a bowl. Knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Rest: Cover with a lightly oiled bowl and let rest for at least 1 hour at room temperature.

Prepare the Filling:
Toast Breadcrumbs: Melt 2 tbsp butter in a pan, add breadcrumbs, and toast until golden. Set aside.

Mix Filling: Combine sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon zest and juice, and raisins.

Assemble:
Roll Out the Dough: Stretch dough on a floured surface or over a tea towel until paper thin (or layer 6–8 phyllo sheets, brushing each with melted butter).

Add Filling: Sprinkle toasted breadcrumbs over the dough, leaving a 2-inch border. Spread the apple mixture evenly on top.

Roll & Seal: Roll up the strudel tightly using the tea towel, then tuck in the ends.

Bake: Place seam side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush with melted butter.

Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 35–40 minutes, brushing with more butter halfway through.

🍽️ To Serve:
Let cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar.

Serve warm with whipped cream, vanilla sauce, or ice cream.
